How the Left uses the First Amendment to destroy our liberty and our culture

“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.” U.S. Constitution, Amendment I

When the Constitution was presented to the states in 1787 for ratification, it was quickly noted that while it only delegated certain limited powers to the Federal Government, there was no clear language preventing it from exercising powers beyond those delegated. Some states demanded the addition of a Bill of Rights as a condition of ratification. After a long public debate carried out in the newspapers of the day —the eighteenth century equivalent of the Blogosphere— it was agreed that a Bill of Rights would be presented to the states for ratification by the first Congress. The result was the first ten amendments to the Constitution.

In the post-constitution America we live in today, both the Constitution and the Bill of Rights are routinely ignored by the Federal government. To add insult to injury, it is not enough that they are ignored by the progressive politicians populating Washington today, over the past century, activists have increasingly learned how to use the Amendments to the Constitution to undermine the historical American Culture and silence opposition. The most egregious distortion of the Constitution is the progressive’s use of the First Amendment to stifle religious liberty and promote its own religious doctrines through legislation, coercion and psychological manipulation. The ultimate purpose is to destroy the Biblical values that are the foundation of the American culture and replace them with the humanistic values that are the foundation of progressivism (American socialism) and other left-wing “-isms”.

Civil laws presuppose moral values and moral values presuppose a religion. At the time of its founding, the prevailing religion of the United States was Christianity; therefore, our Constitution reflects biblical values and civil laws based on the Constitution will reflect those same values. The prevailing religion of modern America is Humanism and thus, civil laws proposed and passed by our progressive legislatures reflect the moral values of Humanism. Progressivism, and the Humanist value system underlying its existence, is antithetical to both the moral values and the political values enshrined in our Constitution. For that reason, it is necessary that the Constitution be overthrown and Christianity be suppressed in order for progressivism to thrive.

The core doctrines of Humanism are based on the principles inherent in the theory of Evolution as expressed in the Humanist Manifestos.

SECOND: Humanism believes that man is a part of nature and that he has emerged as a result of a continuous process.
FIFTH: Humanism asserts that the nature of the universe depicted by modern science makes unacceptable any supernatural or cosmic guarantees of human values.”

All social and political activities of organized Humanism emanate from the fundamental principle of Evolution. Without it Humanism could not exist. This explains why Humanists panic and become hysterical whenever Creationism is mentioned by an educator or politician. The famous Scopes “monkey trial” of 1925, a publicity stunt dreamed up by George Rappleyea, Manager of a local coal and iron company, to generate publicity for the town of Dayton, Tennessee, drew world wide attention to the controversy between Evolution and Creation. Since that time, Humanist, with the aid of the ACLU and the AHLC have instigated a virtual avalanche of well planned lawsuits, selected for their propaganda value, to promote Humanist values and purge Christian values from our educational, political and societal institutions.

The primary instrument for the suppression of Christian values in education and other institutions has been a perverted interpretation of the First Amendment. Even the most trivial reference to Christian values, or any display of Christian symbols, such as crosses, the Decalogue, crèches, or the wearing of clothing or jewelry containing Christian symbols can result in a student, educator or educational institution being hauled into court, charged with violating the doctrine of “separation of church and state”. The cost in money and time to defend against these allegations has caused many educators to go to extraordinary lengths to prevent any expression of Christian values in an educational settings. This, of course, is the primary objective of the lawsuits in the first place.

On the other hand, Humanist doctrines of situational ethics, LGBT equality, multi-culturalism, open borders, radical environmentalism, wealth redistribution, “reproductive rights”, etc., are routinely taught in lectures and textbooks under the rubric of “social justice” and science. Any protests on behalf of Christian values are routinely met with cries of “freedom of speech, freedom of the press or academic freedom” and the claim of protection under the First Amendment. At the same time protestors are labeled as bigots, racists, homophobes, and religious fanatics, and accused of attempting to “ram religion down the throats of others”. The continual onslaught of litigation and “politically correct” demands by the left against Biblical and historical American values has resulted in the corruption of our culture and the erosion of our liberties. An apt description of the twenty-first century American culture was written by the Apostle Paul two thousand years ago in the Book of Romans.

“…Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, and changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and four-footed beasts, and creeping things.

“Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonor their own bodies between themselves: Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator , who is blessed for ever. Amen. For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompense of their error which was meet .

“And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient ; Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers, backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, without understanding, covenant breakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful: Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.”  Romans 1: 18-32

Freedom of conscience is a psychological reality, not a “constitutional right”. The conscience cannot be affected by coercion, threats, or violence, as the blood of millions of martyrs over the past two thousand years attests. It can, however, be dampened by constant exposure to an immoral environment, well timed propaganda, social pressure, the opinions of others, and misguided teachers of Humanist values. Christian Churches, Pastors and laymen must take a stand against the Humanist values that have permeated our culture over the past century if we are to save our republic and continue to enjoy the blessings of God on our nation. “For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.” Ephesians 6:12

Another Big Lie of the Left

One of the most absurd and dangerous ideas ever sold to the American people is found in the oft repeated slogan, “Our diversity is our strength”. We have heard this a lot lately with the push for open borders and sodomite marriage. A little reflection mixed with a little common sense quickly shows the fallacy of this cliché. “How can two walk together except they be agreed?”  The problem is that it has been repeated so often and sounds so appealing that many if not most of our fellow citizens have accepted it as the gospel truth. Consequently, they are not too alarmed when the Democrat Party uses the many diverse groups that make up the American society to divide us into voting blocks designed to keep them in power.

The Hallmark of the American socialists who make up today’s Democrat Party, is their success in dividing the American people into groups along racial, ethnic, economic and social lines, and then pandering to those groups through legislation designed to secure their loyalty in dependable, organized voting blocs. Often proponents of this tactic use the motto, “E Pluribus Unum”, Latin for, “Out of many, one,”  inscribed on the Great Seal of the United States, to show that diversity has always been an American ideal.

As is usual when progressives attempt to use language to support their causes, the motto on the Great Seal has a meaning opposite to what the left would have us believe. At the time it was adopted by the Continental Congress in 1781, it had nothing do with the population makeup of the thirteen colonies. Rather it was a graphic illustration of the unity of those colonies in their opposition to British tyranny under King George III.

On the face of the Great Seal immediately above the banner containing the motto, we see a constellation of thirteen stars representing the unity of the thirteen colonies. The shield has thirteen stripes, again representing the thirteen colonies. The olive branch, a universally recognized symbol of peace, held in the eagle’s claw, has thirteen leaves and thirteen berries. The thirteen arrows, held in the other claw represent the Iroquois symbol of war. Together, they form a graphic illustration of a line found in the Declaration of Independence, “We must, therefore, acquiesce in the necessity which denounces our separation, and hold them, as we hold the rest of mankind, Enemies in War, in Peace, Friends. (End of next to last para.)

On the reverse side of the seal, we see an unfinished pyramid with thirteen levels representing the yet unfilled potential of the Union. Above the pyramid we have the all-seeing eye of Divine Providence watching over its progress, another reference to the Declaration; “with a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor.” (Last sentence in Declaration of Ind.)

The Great Seal of the United States was officially adopted by the new Congress on September 15, 1789 when it ordered, “that the seal heretofore used by the United States in Congress assembled, shall be, and hereby is declared to be, the seal of the United States.”  The motto inscribed on the seal became the unofficial motto of the U.S. until Congress adopted “In God We Trust” as the Nation’s official motto in 1956. U. S. coins today have both mottoes inscribed on them, one on each side. It is important to recognize that in the thinking of the Founders the emphasis was on the unity, “One”, not the diverse, “Many”.

It was not diversity that supplied the strength to build the most prosperous and powerful nation on earth. Our unity was, and is our strength. When we lose that unity, we become correspondingly weaker as a nation. Neither does our history support the proponents of multiculturalism and diversity. There were several other colonies on the North American continent at the time of the Revolution in 1776. The largely French speaking colonies of Canada did not join in the Revolution or in the formation of the new government, although the Articles of Confederation made provision for their inclusion. Of course, the Spanish speaking colonies to the south did not participate, leaving the thirteen English speaking colonies along the Atlantic Coast from Maine to Georgia with one culture, one language and one God. It was the unification of this group that was illustrated by the Great Seal.

In Matthew 12:25 Jesus spoke the self-evident truth that, “Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and every city or house divided against itself shall not stand:”  That will be America’s fate, if we continue to allow the left’s efforts to divide us to succeed, as it has been doing for the last several decades. We must reject the ideas of multilingualism and multiculturalism if we are to regain the liberties we have lost and once again take control of our government. That does not mean that we should reject immigration or that we deny the many blessings of citizenship to the diverse sub-cultures that make up our society. It means that new immigrants and the positive elements of the sub-cultures must be assimilated into the overall American culture, as they were by our forefathers during the founding and expansion of America for the first four-hundred or so years of our existence. America is a nation of former immigrants who wished to become Americans. America afforded them the opportunity and encouragement to do just that, and we must do so again or we will be brought to “desolation” and “shall not stand” as a nation.

Forget the social issues? You got to be kidding!

Fiscal conservatives, moderates and libertarians, particularly those supporting Ron Paul for President, are advising Republicans to forget about the social issues in the 2012 election campaigns. The theory is that brining up issues like gay marriage, abortion, or religion will alienate independents, women, moderates etc., resulting in a loss for the Republican candidate and a return to office of Barack Obama. They argue that the only issues in this campaign are economic: jobs, spending, taxes, and the ballooning national debt.

These, of course, are critical and immediate problems that must be dealt with if we are to continue as a free nation. However, they are only symptoms of a greater underlying crisis. Of far more significance than our economic woes is the problem of our decaying culture. The newspapers carry stories daily about mass murders, parents killing their children and children killing their parents, teenage gang wars with innocents being killed in crossfire, domestic violence, robberies, corruption at all levels of government, and government officially sanctioning abortion and sodomy. All these things reflect the decline of the American culture that has transpired over the past half-century.

When we demand our government officials follow the rules of government laid out in our founding documents we are usually thinking of the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. These documents provide the basis for our form of government. However, they do not provide a sound source for shaping our culture which is even more important, since government is the outgrowth of a nation’s culture and moral foundation. The founding document on which the American culture was established is overlooked by the mass of the American people and despised by the progressives. It is that document that shaped the moral character of America for 169 years before the Declaration of Independence.

The founding document that provides the foundation for our culture is the Holy Bible. I realize that the mere mentioning of the Bible or Christianity makes many Americans uncomfortable and sometimes angry. That’s okay, the Bible is supposed to do that, because it reminds us of how far short of God’s requirements we fall in our social and moral responsibilities. “for the Word of God is quick and powerful, and sharper than any two edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart” . Hebrews 4:12.

America is a Christian nation; its culture was founded on the Judeo-Christian principles found in the King James Version of the Bible. To deny that fact is to deny history. When the first settlers came to America in 1607 they brought with them The Bishop’s Bible first printed in 1568. Both the Pilgrims and the Puritans, as dissenters from the Church of England, preferred the Geneva Bible printed in 1560. Both Bibles were large “pulpit” Bibles, the Geneva Bible being 14 inches thick, too heavy for one man to lift and carry. A copy of these Bibles was usually kept in the Bishop’s or Pastor’s residence for his personal study with a second copy chained to the pulpit in the Church for public use. Readers were routinely available to read the Bible to the illiterate.

In 1611, the King James Version replaced the Bishop’s Bible as the official, authorized version. In 1612, a home sized edition of the King James Bible was published and made available to the public. For the first time in history, it became possible for ordinary citizens to own and study the Bible for themselves. The King James Version soon overtook the Geneva Bible in popularity and the Geneva Bible went out of print in 1644. Throughout the colonial period and early history of the United States the King James Bible was commonly used in Churches and homes everywhere in America. The KJV had no serious competition for the loyalty of American Christians until the progressive era when the English Revised Version began to gain popularity among “modernists” and secular Christians during the 1880s.

The Founder’s generation was intimately familiar with the King James Bible. It enjoyed a status in the American home similar to the telephone and TV today; virtually every home had a “family Bible“. It was used to record marriages, births, deaths and other important events and passed down from generation to generation as a record of the family history. It was used to teach children to read and family members gathered daily for Bible reading. No book in history has ever approached the readership of the King James Bible. It the only book ever to have a billion copies in print. The Bible is also the most hated book in history. There have been periods when its mere possession was punishable by torture and death.

The Framers were well versed in Bible principles and were influenced by those principles when they wrote the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. Two principles they especially took to heart was the “liberty of conscience” and the “providence of God” over the affairs of nations. Benjamin Franklin addressed the Philadelphia Convention with these words: “The longer I live, the more convincing proofs I see of this truth—That God governs the affairs of men. And if a sparrow cannot fall to the ground without his notice, is it probable that an empire can arise without His aid?” George Washington commented concerning the Convention, “The hand of Providence has been so conspicuous in all this, that he must be worse than an infidel who lacks faith, and more than wicked, that has not gratitude enough to acknowledge his obligations.”

The Constitution does not mention God or religion because it is a governing document and religion is not the business of government. However, the First Amendment guarantees absolute freedom in all matters of religion: “Congress shall make no law respecting the establishment of religion or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press…”  These two clauses guarantee absolute religious liberty to all Americans. It forbids the federal government from prescribing any particular religion or sect on the American People. It also reaffirms our right to worship God in any way we choose, and to speak or write freely in expressing our faith to others. As Thomas Jefferson said, “…religion is a matter which lies solely between man and his God…”

The religious liberty guaranteed by the First Amendment was more or less honored until 1962. Three ruling by the Supreme Court in 1962 and 1963 made it unlawful to pray or read the Bible in public schools. These and subsequent rulings by the courts added to the doctrine of political correctness resulted in changing the religious liberty enjoyed by our forefathers into religious tolerance only. Today we are not allowed to affirm our faith publicly, especially in a public setting or event. We are told that religious matters should be restricted to church or other religious functions. A Christianity that is confined within the walls of a church building or other special religious event is not the Christianity of the Bible and is of little use in reinforcing the moral foundation of our culture.

George Washington warned us in his farewell address to the nation in 1796, “…let us with caution indulge the supposition that morality can be maintained without religion. Whatever may be conceded to the influence of refined education on minds of peculiar structure, reason and experience both forbid us to expect that national morality can prevail in exclusion of religious principle.” The words of Thomas Jefferson regarding the institution of slavery in 1785 is applicable today as we consider how far we have strayed from our culture’s founding document: “Can the liberties of a nation be thought secure when we have removed their only firm basis, a conviction in the minds of people that these liberties are the gift of God? That they are not to be violated but with his wrath? Indeed I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just: that his justice cannot sleep forever…; The Almighty has no attribute which can take side with us in such a context…”

The New Testament makes it clear that for individuals, our works will be judged at the “Day of Judgment”. However, the Old Testament makes in equally clear that nations are judged in the here and now when they ignore the natural laws established by our Creator and His revealed will. Those who argue that we ignore the so-called “social issues” and focus only on matters of money are ignoring history and the God of history, inviting His judgment. “It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.”  Heb. 10:31

Schwarzenegger and Brown Will Not Defend Propostion 8

And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;”

In November 2008, the people of California went to the polls and voted to amend California’s Constitution defining marriage as between a man and a woman, prohibiting same-sex marriage. The Initiative, known as Proposition 8 was upheld by the California Supreme Court as “a valid exercise of the people’s initiative authority under the state Constitution”. Chief U.S. District Judge Vaughn Walker struck down Proposition 8 last month as being unconstitutional. An appeal is scheduled to be heard by the Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on December 6. Both Republican Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and Democratic Attorney General Jerry Brown have indicated they will not participate in appealing Judge Walker’s ruling, which, in effect makes same-sex marriage legal again in California.

Marriage is the world’s oldest social institution. Homosexuality is the world’s oldest social taboo. The American left seeks to destroy the former and promote the latter. Throughout the six thousand or so years of recorded history, marriage has always been between men and women, even in those societies where polygamy is practiced. No society has ever recognized same-sex marriage, with the possible exception of the one on the Plain of Jordan where the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah were located. That society was short lived, lasting only until God destroyed it and all of its inhabitants.

There are strong societal and moral reasons why marriage has always been limited to the social union between men and women. In every society the initiation of a marriage relationship is celebrated with elaborate ceremonies and festivities because of the promise marriage portends for the continuing survival and wellbeing of that society. The foundation and building blocks of any society are stable, lasting family units. The future of society is vested in its children and the health and well-being of children is dependent on the stability of the family unit, with a loving mother and a loving father. Eric Berne taught that a boy learns what it means to become a man from his mother and the lesson is personified by following the example set by his father. The reverse is true for the girl learning what it means to become a woman.

In recognition of the value of families to society, it and its governments have always granted special privileges, both cultural and legal, to marriage relationships. There is no societal advantage to same-sex marriage; therefore there is no justification for elevating it to the same status as heterosexual marriage. The purpose of marriage for producing and nurturing future generations of citizens does not exist in same-sex marriage; consequently there is no reason for the expense and adjustments necessary by society, in order to grant the recognition of “civil marriage” to homosexual relationships.  By granting the same privileges to same-sex couples although there is no advantage to society in doing so, cheapens the value of heterosexual marriage and undermines the value of “family”.

There are also important moral issues to be considered in the debate over gay-marriage. It has become popular in modern times to consider morality an individual matter that should be of no concern to government. This idea is expressed in the often-repeated cliché, “you can’t legislate morality”.  Nothing could be further from the truth. All civil law is based on some type of moral code. Laws against murder, mayhem, robbery, fraud, etc. are all morally based. A free nation cannot endure without the existence of laws based on morality and justice. Not only does the existence of a nation depend on a moral code, that code must have an objective source. The objective moral code for America has always been the Bible.

The Bible has much to say about marriage and sexuality. In the story of Creation, the Bible records that God made man in his own image and gave him dominion over all living things. (Gen. 1:26, 27) After man’s creation, the Bible says God created a “help meet” for him in the form of a woman. (Gen. 2:20-24) Note that He did not create another man as a companion for Adam but a woman. In verse 24, it says, “therefore shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.” The phrase “and they shall be one flesh”, I believe, refers to the biological miracle of conception, when the seed of the man merges with the seed of the woman to become one new and unique human life.

In Genesis 2:24, God introduces the concept of marriage, In Genesis 19:1-26, God demonstrated his wrath at perverting the concept into homosexual relationships, by raining down fire and brimstone to destroy Sodom, Gomorrah and all the Plain of Jordan. Thousands of years later, Jesus began his public ministry at a marriage feast in Cana, where he changed water into wine. John records this as the “beginning of miracles”. (John 2:1-11) The fact that Jesus performed his first miracle in the celebration of marriage illustrates His high regard for the institution just as the story of Sodom and Gomorrah illustrates God’s condemnation of its perversion through homosexuality.

The blessings of God on America during the early years of its formation and growth are a widely recognized and self-evident truth. Before we allow our governments to fundamentally change the most important and sacred institution of civilization, we need to be aware of God’s wrath just as we are of his love.
